At Evening Time There Shall Be Light

“At Evening Time There Shall Be Light” “God very frequently acts in grace in such a manner that we can find a parallel in nature. For instance, God says, ‘As the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, even so shall my word be, it shall not return unto me void, it shall accomplish that which I please, it shall prosper in the thing whereto I have sent it.’ “We find him speaking concerning the coming of Christ, ‘He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass, as showers that water the earth.’ We find him liking the covenant of grace to the covenant which he made with Noah concerning the seasons, and with man concerning the different revolutions of the year—‘Seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.’ “We find that the works of creation are very frequently the mirror of the works of grace, and that we can draw figures from the world of Nature to illustrate the great acts of God in the world ...

Why Does God Sometimes Not Give What We Ask?

Have you ever prayed fervently and, as far as you could tell, according to God’s will, and yet the Father did not grant your request? If you answered “yes” to this question, you’re not alone. In 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, the apostle Paul tells of a time when he prayed with passion, three times, that a “messenger of Satan” would be driven away from him, that a “thorn in the flesh” would be removed from him, but in the end the Father answered “no.” Instead, he replied, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (12:9). I once prayed and asked the Father to deliver me out of a situation, but my sense of his reply was this: “I don’t want to deliver you out of this; I want to develop you in this.” And that is precisely what he ended up doing in my life.  How, then, are we to understand such experiences in light of such a strong promise as this: “…ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you”? I see at least six reasons why the Father may not ...

What happens when people Google “Jesus”?

The following blog was taken from Cru’s blog . It was published on September 25, 2015 by Lillian Cain. Moment of vulnerability here: I have looked up some embarrassing questions on Google. What does “YOLO” mean? Is butter a carb? Which ocean is the Pacific? Is it bad if your engine smokes? What is a Bronie? Who is Justice Beaver? I mean come on, be honest, haven't you? (P.S. Most of the above examples are only for dramatic effect, please don't judge me.) I remember in the 90s and early 2000s when people said the Internet was just a fad. Well, I sort of remember...I was in my elementary and middle school years so my cultural awareness wasn't the sharpest. But man, were those people wrong. The rapid advancement of the internet has created a fascinating cultural climate. I know it's cliché, but we really do have a world of information at our fingertips – more information than we even have the capacity to comprehend. And so when we have a question, wha...

Sermon Questions - April 10, 2016

Exiled in Faithfulness 1 Samuel 26:1-27:12 April 10, 2016 Study Questions 1.       Read 1 Samuel 26:1-5. Why did the Ziphites betray David? Had they done this before? How did Saul respond and why? How did David learn of Saul’s location and what did he do? 2.     Read 1 Samuel 26:6-16. What did David first do? What did Abishai encourage him to do? How did David respond? What did David assert about Saul’s future? What did David then do and why did his plan work? 3.      Once the plan was executed, who did David call out to and why? Of what did David accuse him? Was David right? 4.      Read 1 Samuel 26:17-25. How did Saul know it was David speaking? Specifically, what did David say to Saul? How did Saul respond? What did he promise? 5.        Read 1 Samuel 27:1-4. Despite Saul’s words, what did David think about his future? Why did he decide to flee to the Philistines and where in pa...

Our Confidence in Prayer

If anyone ever knew the power of a praying life, it was the Apostle John. When he was old and eager to lead the precious people of God in the way they should go, he wrote 1 John which, among other things, makes this promise about prayer. “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).  John’s words echo those of Jesus and reiterate his great and precious promises regarding prayer. But as with Jesus’ words, John’s promise comes with this caveat: to have our prayers affirmatively answered by God, we must ask according to his will. How, then, can we know that we are praying according to his will?  First, we know that we are praying according to God’s will when we pray! That is to say, our Father invites and commands us to pray—to make our cares known to him, to offer our reque...

5 Ways To Be a Better Witness for Christ: Simple ways to introduce more people to Christ

The following blog post is taken with a couple of slight modifications from Cru's blog . It was published on March 26, 2013 by Rich Atkinson.  Beginning a relationship with Christ is the most important thing a person can do, and you can help them. But how do you increase your witness for Christ? These are 5 things you can start doing today. 1. Be Filled with the Spirit It is important to be in a right relationship with God as you talk to others about how they can know God. So that means maintaining short accounts with God and others and confessing sin. Practice “Spiritual Breathing” and being filled with the Spirit. 2. Pray for Opportunities While serving as missionaries overseas, two roommates started praying for a man who had attended church, but didn’t truly understand about Jesus. The two men prayed specifically that the Lord would wake this man up in the middle of the night and give him dreams about God. A few weeks later, the man came to a meet...

Bearing Lasting Fruit in Prayer

Over the last two months I’ve been writing about the importance of asking the Lord for specific things in prayer, and about the powerful promises he makes to those who will do so. Although the extent and repetition of his promises raise legitimate questions, it is undeniable that Jesus’ desire for his people is that we would grow in him until we receive whatever we ask of the Father in prayer.  This call to effective prayer is high and holy, and Jesus helps us to better understand it in John 15:16 where he says this: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” Let’s take note of several things in Jesus’ words.  First, notice that Jesus chose us and that we did not choose him. Of course, at some point in our lives, we decided to embrace the being and claims of Jesus and to follow him for the rest of our lives. Bu...
