Questions for Study and Meditation

  1. Read John 12:44-47. Considering the flow of John 12, to whom is Jesus speaking? Who does a believer truly believe in? What does this teach us about the nature of God and the mission of Jesus? What reason did Jesus give for why he came into the world?
  2. Read John 12:48-50. What did Jesus mean when he said that he does not judge the one who disobeys his words? Why did Jesus say he came into the world?
  3. Who or what is the judge of the one who rejects Jesus and his words? When will this judgment occur? Where did Jesus’ words come from? Where does the inescapable authority of Jesus’ word come from?
  4. What’s the most important thing you learned from today’s sermon? From John 12:44-50?
  5. How has this sermon helped you to grow in love for God and others?
  6. What’s the most important thing Jesus would have you do in light of this sermon?
  7. Take some time to worship Jesus. Thank him, praise him, and ask for his help as you seek to strive with other believers for the faith of the gospel.

I know I am a little bit overweight. My doctor tells me so. The mirror that I look into affirms it and the scale (that I mostly avoid) reminds me every time I step on it. All of that makes what I am about to say so much more impressive. I had the privilege of sitting on the beaches of Florida's Atlantic coast for 8 days on our most recent family trip. For me there is something magical about the beach, especially on the Atlantic side with the waves washing up against the shoreline. We have been lucky enough to find a sleepy beach town to vacation at. A nook, if you will, that typically features retired folks or families with kids. Out of the way of those who want to party, the beach is truly a relaxing place for me.  Let me tell you something that I gleaned this time around that never quite landed on me. A Letter To My Mom

I wrote this to honor my own lovely mom and the moms of my beloved church. They are just some musings on the importance of a mom from the perspective of a 36 year old pastor. Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there. What is so significant about moms? Only everything. It dawned on me recently why moms and their children share such a special relationship. When I was being formed in your womb, God was there, present with me and present with you. Imagine, the hand of the creator, the one who hung the stars and gives them names, reached down into your tummy and put me together, there, inside of you.  We can say this together : “such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
