An Easter Text - Philippians 3:1-4:1

Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also.  If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.  But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found...

Sermon Summary - Are You Ready? (Luke 19:41-44)

Praying Fervently About Everything

Last week pondered Jesus’ words from John 15:7-8 and the fact that he invites us to pray with holy fervency; this week we will ponder the fact that he invites us to pray like this about anything and everything. As the Apostle Paul later wrote, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” And elsewhere, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6, emphasis mine).  How can Jesus invite us into such a broad life of prayer? Isn’t he obligating himself to answer prayers he doesn’t want to answer? In other words, isn’t he concerned that we will ask for things that are not glorifying to him and good for us and others? The answer to this question would be “yes,” were it not for the conditions that Jesus laid out in the first part of the verse, namely, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you…”  When the...

Sermon Questions - March 13, 2016

Restraining Grace 1 Samuel 25:1-44 March 13, 2016 Study Questions 1.     Read 1 Samuel 25:1a. Given how prominent a man Samuel was, why do you think the author gave so little space to his death? Who was Nabal? What did David request of him and in what spirit? 3.     Read 1 Samuel 25:9-17. How did Nabal respond to the request? What reason did he give? What did David plan to do in return? How many went with him and how many stayed behind? How did Abigail come to know of David’s plans? 4.     Read 1 Samuel 25:18-35. What specifically did Abigail plan to do? What were David’s specific intentions? Upon meeting him, what Did Abigail say of Nabal and how did his name play into her words? 5.     What did Abigail say the Lord was doing t...

Ask Whatever You Wish and It Will Be Done

Jesus said in John 15:7-8, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” The word “ask” in the original language is a strong one. It means to beg, to call for, to crave, to desire, and even to require of the one entreated. That is to say, this word implies great passion, intensity, and fervency in prayer. And indeed, fervency is a necessary aspect of all true praying. Consider these words from the nineteenth-century pastor E. M. Bounds: “Prayers must be red hot. It is the fervent prayer that is effectual and that availeth. Coldness of spirit hinders praying; prayer cannot live in a wintry atmosphere. Chilly surroundings freeze out petitioning; and dry up the springs of supplication. It takes fire to make prayers go. Warmth of soul creates an atmosphere favorable to pray...

Sermon Questions - March 6, 2016

Revering the Lord’s Anointed 1 Samuel 24:1-22 March 6, 2016 Study Questions 1.       Read 1 Samuel 24:1-7. Where was the wilderness of Engedi? Why was Saul so bent on pursuing David? How many did he take with him this time? 2.       After Saul inadvertently entered the cave, what did David’s men encourage David to do? What specific reason did they give David for doing so? Did the Lord ever speak such a word? 3.       What did David then do and how did he feel about it? Judging from David’s words, why did he feel this way? Why, then, did David’s men stand down and let Saul escape? 4.     Read 1 Samuel 24:8-15. After Saul left the cave, what specifically did David do and why? What specifically did David say and why? Why did David quote an ancient proverb and what part does it play in the story? 5.       Who was David trusting in to deliver him? What now made him so bold as to say this to Saul in th...

Will We Really Do Greater Works than Jesus?

In John 14:12-14 Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”  When carefully considered, Jesus’ words are stunning to the point of disbelief. That is, they roll off the tongue with ease but only infiltrate the heart as we meditate, pray, and allow the Holy Spirit to do his work in us. No one had ever done the works Jesus did. He taught with unusual authority. He exercised irresistible power over evil spirits, including Satan himself. He healed the sick and raised the dead. He commanded the winds and waves and other natural things and they obeyed him.  Given the extraordinary and regular occurrence of such works in Jesus’ life, what can it possibly mean to say that those who believe in him will do simi...
