You Are What You Think By Pastor Kevin Feder

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 “You are what you eat,” goes the popular saying. Scripture seems to teach us that you are what you think. Philippians 4:8 addresses the thinking faculty of a believer and suggests that it is a crucial part of their faith in God. There is an ongoing aspect to Philippians 4:8, suggesting that our thinking is something we need to constantly assess and constantly manage. Our thinking is a vital part of our worship to God. At any given moment we are relating to God poorly or relating to him well. It is all based on what we are thinking and more importantly, what we are thinking of God’s truth and his beauty. Philippians 4:8 is by no means an anomaly in the NT. Scripture is filled with instructives that call attention to a person’s t

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life by Pastor Charlie Handren

In the hours before he took up his cross, Jesus prepared his disciples for what was to come by showing them the path to peace. Along the way, he said that his disciples knew the way to where he was going, but this was confusing to them because they didn’t know. Or at least they thought they didn’t know. Eventually, Thomas spoke up and asked, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way? [This just isn’t making sense]” (14:5).      Knowing that he had the disciples’ full attention, Jesus answered, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (14:6-7). When Jesus uttered the words “I Am,” he was invoking the sacred name of God for at least the sixth time in the Gospel of John and he was applying it to himself. He was claiming to be Yahweh. In so doing, he also attached three words to this holy name that were de

Fear Not, Beloved - Fear Not by Pastor Charlie Handren

This week’s Fighter Verses, drawn from Isaiah 43, are timely for our congregation. I encourage you to carefully and prayerfully meditate on every word. Isaiah writes, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:1-3).      In these verses God gives us a gracious command, tells us the foundation of that command, and makes two interrelated promises. First, God commands us not to fear. Fear comes in many forms, and it has many causes, but at the root of all fear is a lack of faith. As Pastor Kevin mentioned in last week’s devotional, to get real about our fear is to get real about our faith because facing our fear leads us to ask questions like these: Do I know God? Do I understand

Because I Am Your God And Because I Am With You by Pastor Kevin Feder

Isaiah 41:10…Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.       Isaiah 41:10 presents the most common one-two punch in the Bible. Don’t Fear. This is the most common command in Scripture. In God’s love letter to us, if we can call it that, the thing he repeats the most is the command to not fear. The second part of it is the rationale for why we shouldn’t fear: God is with us. I am so glad God communicates with his people in this way, aren’t you? He could just command us not to fear. He does more. God also tells us how we could possibly have success in not fearing: knowing that God is with us. Actually, I should say it this way: believing that God is with us.       This invites us to get real about our fears and our faith. In fact, if you like to read between the lines you will come to see that the Bible diagnoses something important about the human heart in this passage.

Encouraging One Another by the Word in Times of Grief By Pastor Charlie Handren

In times of grief we sometimes offer one another empty platitudes, mainly because we don’t know what else to say or do. But sometimes, for fear of making this mistake, we remain silent and fail to encourage one another with godly wisdom, even though this is what the Scripture calls us to do.      Consider the words of Paul where he writes, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left,

Dealing With Grief According to God's Truth by Pastor Kevin

Dealing with Grief Biblically As we think about dealing with the death of a loved one I would like to present at least a few relevant biblical categories and some Bible passages that goes along with it. God is calling his people to embrace his truth by faith. May we come to know the love of God which surpasses knowledge through our time of grief. This may be a useful resource for yourself or your child.  God is in Control – God is Sovereign God’s sovereignty means God has the right, the wisdom, and power to do all that he pleases. Psalm 115:3 Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Amos 3:6 Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the Lord has done it? Isaiah 45:7 I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things. Matthew 10:29-30 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from y
