Funding Global Missions by Pastor Charlie Handren

On May 12, 1792 William Carey published a little pamphlet entitled, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens . By God’s grace, his words inspired the modern missionary movement, and by God’s grace, I’m praying that they will inspire a fresh passion for global missions at Glory of Christ.      Having urged his readers, and his own Baptist denomination, to create organizations that seriously endeavor to obey the Great Commission, Carey turned to the subject of funding and shared three simple points. First, he admitted that money for global missions will always be lacking so that we will always have to depend on the Lord and seek ways of raising resources. While this reality is among the most difficult and frustrating for those who are engaged in global missions, it is also among the most important because it is one of the primary ways God teaches his people that they can only obey his commands by his might, power, and resources. I

Life In Christ Is Life Together by Pastor Charlie Handren

The Apostle Peter drew his second letter to a close with these wise and pastoral words: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18). The word “grow” is an exhortation and a command, and it implies that if we’re to progress in Christ we must play an active role, by the grace of Christ, in building habits that nurture our progress.      One of the elements that is necessary to that growth is active engagement in Christian community. Indeed, Christians are designed by Jesus to grow in him together, so much so that we can say, without reservation, that life in Christ is life together . This idea is not hard to understand or see on nearly every page of the New Testament. The difficulty comes in the living.      In the early days of the church, those who believed in Jesus Christ were utterly committed to the worship of Christ, and they were utterly committed to one another. Growing In Grace By The Word Of God by Pastor Charlie Handren

Perhaps the key habit that is necessary for growing in Christ, both individually and corporately, is time spent in the Word of God.      Isaiah wrote, “The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught” (Isaiah 50:4).      The longing of our God and Father is to draw near to his children morning by morning, opening our eyes to his glory and our hearts to his mercy. He wants to use his Word, by his

Helping Your Children Detect and Deal With Anger by Pastor Kevin

Some people struggle with anger more than others...but everyone deals with it. Anger is part of the sin nature that every human being is born with. When sin entered the world and mankind was separated from God the problem of anger in the heart of man was birthed. As a parent you might have come to the realization that you have one or more children who has a significant struggle with anger. What do you do? How do you respond? How is the gospel of Jesus skillfully applied in your parenting? Let me start off by reminding parents that your calling is to make disciples of Jesus and help them to respond to the gospel by faith. Your calling is not to scrub their garments clean of sinful anger. You do not have the power to do this. Only Jesus does. What parents can do is help their child to see their sinful responses of anger and then hold out the hope of Jesus Christ. With enough skill and help from the Holy Spirit parents can winsomely help their child to see that Jesus is superior to t

Organizing for Missions: Part 2 by Pastor Charlie Handren

On May 12, 1792 William Carey published a little pamphlet entitled, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens . By God’s grace, his words inspired the modern missionary movement, and by God’s grace, I’m praying that they will inspire a fresh passion for global missions at Glory of Christ.      Having urged his readers to commit themselves to prayer for the sake of missions, and having called on his own Baptist denomination to lead the way in forming a mission society, Carey, Andrew Fuller, John Ryland, and John Sutcliff founded the Particular Baptist Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Amongst the Heathen (subsequently known as the Baptist Missionary Society and since 2000 as BMS World Mission) in October 1792. This society, along with Carey’s public speaking engagements, inspired others to rise up and form many more societies, to send thousands of missionaries around the world, and to bear much fruit for the glory of
